Date Night

I love the idea of taking the time to have proper dates even after marriage. Even if it's not dressing up and hitting the town, taking the time to plan something is so much fun. For my birthday Lane planned a quasi- How I Met Your Mother date with dressed up laser tag and a cigar/martini bar. Here are some of my favorite date ideas. Some of these are from my experience, and others just seem like fun.

1. Manly-Man Date

All images via Google Image Search

I planned out this date for Lane a few years ago while I was still living in Arlington. First,  we went to Ray's the Steaks for amazing steak and the best crab bisque in the D.C area. Then we headed up the road to Whitlows for a few rounds of Big Buck Hunter. I love this game, and it a fun way to get competitive.
What You Need:
1. Good Steak House
2. Find a bar with Big Buck Hunter ( I would recommend going before the crazy bar crowd arrives so there isn't competition for the machines)
3. About ten dollars of quarters.

2. Art House Date

This is a date that I think would be really fun. You purchase two white canvases from somewhere like Michaels or even Target. Buy paints in a variety of colors. This is where you can pick an idea, or just paint whatever you want. I like the idea of doing abstract self portraits, or even portraits of one another. It is just fun to be creative together. There is no guarantee that you will create a Pollock like the above, but would be a really entertaining way to spend an evening.
What you Need:
1. Two white canvases
2. Variety of paint colors
3. Newspaper to cover the floor or an area that can get messy
4. Creativity!

3. Top Chef Night

This is another stay at home date night. It would probably be best for a couple that already likes to cook, which Lane and I love to do. If you have seen any of those cooking competition shows you get the idea of how this will go. I think this would be even more fun with two couples. One team/person picks out the ingredients and the other has 30 minutes/and hour to make something delicious. Obviously the judging isn't quite the same as hopefully no one starts crying.

Other ideas
1. Reenact your first date
2. Go for a hike
3. Take a cooking class together
4. Go to a pottery glazing place and decorate a plate for each year of marriage.
5.  Go-karts
6. I will always recommend laser tag.
7. Volunteer with Habitat for Humanity together. Find your local branch here.
8. Go to an afternoon showing for a movie that 1) Has been out for a while 2) Won't have a ton of people there and 3) You won't be sad to miss parts. Then, proceed to make out through the whole movie. Imagine you are teenagers again. I give this idea with the caveat that it is ONLY appropriate in a practically empty theater and not in front of children.

Anyone else have date suggestions?

High Five Friday

Happy Friday! I haven't done Lauren's link-up in a while, and thought this would be a good week.

1. The job fair went really well yesterday. There weren't a huge number of employers there, but I made a few good connections. The most likely job right now is teaching political science at the local community college. I am waiting on one more letter of reference but feel good about my chances. It isn't full time, but would be a great start.

2. We have a move in date for our house. I officially set a date to close out our storage unit. I will be at home for a wedding on the actual date we can move in, so Lane will be alone for a few days in an empty house. I can't wait to unload our lives and finally get settled.

3. In two weeks I am heading to D.C for a few days to hang out with some of my favorite people. I was looking at flights to Atlanta for a wedding, and realized how much cheaper it was to fly from D.C than Syracuse. I get to see this girl for five days:

4. I am officially done being sick. The first half of this week was miserable. I am so grateful to finally feel better.

5. We discovered plantain chips this week. Plantain chips smothered in salsa verde are delicious and dangerously addicting.

Awesome

I am going to a job fair today and feel the need to put some awesome vibes into the universe.

Now I know that political beliefs may cloud your impression of this picture. However, it is irrefutably awesome to be looking this boss in the back of a C-17. Sunglasses on and laying the smack down to Bashar Assad ( No idea what she is really doing. Possibly playing Words With Friends). Sadly, I don't know where this picture is from. I saw it floating around facebook.

a Lego Cake...how freakin awesome is this?!

My husband would die of happiness if I made this cake. I am scared to predict the mountains of Lego which will appear once we have children.

So any time someone combines Doctor Who and Harry Potter, I melt. I know it has been an extremely nerdy week here on the blog. I blame the hours of tumblr.

Who's in charge here?

I find this so adorable. Little girls bossing around big burly Marines is indubitably awesome.

A little How I Met Your Mother reference. I am hoping to bring the awesome tomorrow. Enough awesome to make someone drop to their knees and offer me a full time job paying absurd amounts of money. That totally happens right?

It's Pinterest Day

My horrendous sickness/ food poisoning has had three main consequences. 1) I have a new love and appreciation for chicken broth. 2) I spent approximately 12354875847 hours on Doctor Who and Harry Potter tumblrs, don't judge me I get very nerdy when I am sick. 3) I haven't spend this much time on Pinterest since I first joined. So I have loads of pins for today's link-up.

I am linking up with Michelle at The Vintage Apple for "Oh How Pinteresting". This is everything that I want to wear this summer, with the possible Doctor Who or Potterhead interruption ( blame the food poisoning induced boredom). I finally purchased those bright blue pants from The Gap, and have only been further convinced that I need more bright colors in my closet. However, I also love the neutral color palette for the summer. I love crisp whites and pale colors.

I really want some scalloped shorts for this summer. The ones from J. Crew are a little too pricey for me. I saw a DIY for cutting your own shorts into scalloped edges. I don't think I am that talented with a sewing machine, but my mother-in-law definitely is.

The number one search term which has brought people to my blog is "Doctor Who Cake Topper". Y'all, I can't even tell you how happy this makes me. I may keep posting about it just to maintain that statistic.

Disastrous Combination

I spent yesterday sick as a dog. In between the fever-ish dreams, I re-read Catching Fire. This was a huge mistake. I ended up having terrifying dreams about being in the actual Hunger Games. I imagined that I was still sick, but simultaneously trying to hide from the other tributes and get better. They were all trying to take me out. This meant that I woke up terrified multiple times throughout the day. Next time I am sick I will stick to less nightmare-inducing material.

Lane was so sweet to me, and ran all around town trying to find something that I could actually keep down. Chicken broth and fruit popsicles did the trick.

Eating Like a Dinosaur

It is hard to believe that I have been eating ( quasi ) paleo for a year. It seemed so daunting at first, but now just feels like second nature. I absolutely feel a difference in my body and my skin. Pancakes were one thing that I missed terribly at first. Until I found this recipe. These pancakes are delicious, and taste great with some grilled bananas and cinnamon.

paleo pancakes
via
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 ½ cups blanched almond flour
  • ¼ teaspoon celtic sea salt
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • grapeseed oil, for cooking (or for Paleo use coconut oil)

  1. In a large bowl whisk together eggs, water, vanilla and honey
  2. Add almond flour, salt and baking soda and mix until thoroughly combined
  3. Heat coconut oil on skillet over medium low to medium heat
  4. Scoop 1 heaping tablespoon of batter at a time onto the skillet
  5. Pancakes will form little bubbles, when bubbles open, flip pancakes over and cook other side
  6. Remove from heat to a plate
  7. Repeat process with remaining batter, add more oil to skillet as needed

Y'all, these pancakes are amazing, without having the huge amounts of sugar that regular flour provides.

Happy Weekend

The North Country decided to welcome in the weekend/ the month of April by dropping down into the 20's and snowing all night. Nonetheless, Friday was really fun. I got a pedicure with a new friend, and now have pretty light blue nails. I have never ventured away from pink or red, but I like it so far.

No-Obligation Book Club - January 2011 - One Day by David Nicholls

We watched One Day on Saturday. I loved the book, but was definitely disappointed by the movie. I have always been a huge fan of Anne Hathaway, but the style of the book didn't translate well to film.

Anne Hathaway

We also may have watched a not-insignificant amount of the Kids Choice Awards. I happened to be flipping through when it was starting, and the green slime got me hooked. The fact that didn't know a good number of the award winners made me feel really old.

And just because I love him, here is a favorite picture of Lane and me, circa 2004-2005. Our school uniforms were the best.
